Following his signing with Sony, Davido has earned another deal with one of America's biggest establishment.
The singer’s 2013 hit song ‘Skelewu’ has been included in the soundtrack for the Disney cinematic production, ‘Queen of Katwe’.
It won’t be the first time a song by a contemporary Nigerian artist
will have a song featured in an American production. The 2006 comedy
'Phat Girlz' featured the 2face hit song ‘African Queen’ off his debut
album Face 2 Face.
‘African Queen’ was used two years after its release. ‘Skelewu’
receives its own Hollywood call three years after its release. The song
is not the only song from a Nigerian artist on the album.
‘Sekem’, the dance hit by MC Galaxy, is also included in the list of
songs from the film. Both artists share a history. In 2012, MC Galaxy,
then a dancer, won a dancing competition hosted by Davido and won
500,000 naira ($1600).
The film Queen of Katwe is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi
from Uganda, a chess player who goes to the World Chess Olympiads. It
stars the Kenyan actress Lupita N’yongo and the British-Nigerian actor
David Oyelowo, and Madina Nalwanga. It opened in Canada at the Toronto
International Film Festival.
The film's principal soundtrack is performed by American singer Alicia Keys.
