Fifty-four students, predominantly teenagers between the ages of 14 and 19 years have tested positive for HIV in Tema between January and September this year.
Thirteen others aged 13 to 19 also tested positive for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and have since been put on counselling and treatment according to Graphic Online's report.
Health officials say, children between 9 and 10 years had become sexually active, but are unable to take precautions due to lack of sexual education.
This information was disclosed by the Tema Metropolitan Director of Health Services, Dr. John Yabani at an outreach programme on adolescent reproductive health and national health insurance services in Tema on Wednesday, September 23.
Sex education has recently become an issue of concern in the country within the high rise of teenage pregnancy especially in the Central region.
