Ghanaian wins maiden edition of ‘Miss Africa Continent’


 The 24-year-old dental hygienist Rebecca Asamoah from Ghana beats 11 finalists drawn from an original list of 40 contestants from across the continent in the maiden pageant at Johannesburg’s Gold Reef City casino on Saturday night, April 30.

South African film producer Neo Mashishi is the pioneer of the pageant and says it aims to empower young African women.

Runner-up was Michelo Malambo of Zambia, while South Africa’s Jemimah Kandimiri claimed position three. The contestants walked the stage barefoot, wearing traditional costumes including animal hide skirts and beaded headdresses before Ghanaian Rebecca Asamoah was crowned the first Miss Africa Continent on Saturday, April 29.

The 24-year-old dental hygienist defeated 11 finalists drawn from an original list of 40 contestants from across Africa in the inaugural pageant at Johannesburg’s Gold Reef City casino on Saturday night.
