Ghana's former President, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, is recommending strict application of the capital punishment law to help reduce the series of cruel murders in the country.
President Rawlings, made this statement during a courtesy call by the family of Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, a former member of parliament who was murdered earlier this year.
“Because we have refused to exact the ultimate punishment, the police will arrest, the courts will sentence but the situation [spate of murders] will continue to rise”, he said.
Quite a large number of Ghanaians have also called for the reinstatement of capital punishment following the brutal deaths of many, including high-profile personalities.
The last execution in Ghana was carried out by firing squad, in 1993.
