Kenyan pupils replace textbooks with tablets

Pupils in a school in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, are among the first to exchange their dusty, and often scarce textbooks, for their digital equivalent.

A local tech firm, BRCK, has designed what it calls the Kio kit, which provides tablets and a local server to students, along with licensed syllabus content in subjects like Math and English.

In Kenya, just five primary schools and libraries are currently using the kit, but the company says it already has 300 orders.

Like the BRCK, the tablets are designed to solve Kenyan problems like erratic power and internet connectivity.

The provision of laptops for school children in Kenya was one of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s campaign pledges.
