South African students clash with police near parliament

South African students who were protesting over a rise in student fees have clashed with the police on their way to parliament.

Police fired stun grenades as the protesters were trying to force their way into the parliamentary complex,

Proposed tuition fee hikes of between 10% and 12% have sparked protests at universities across the country.

Students have complained that the fee increment will affect many, especially most black students whose families on an average, earn less than white families.

Both #NationalShutDown and #FeesMustFall are trending on social media in South Africa.

Reports say, some institutions have temporarily shut down.

According to BBC, protests are intensifying as students refuse to back down. Heavy police presence is said to be at most institutions.
