OPINION: Developing Ghana's Maritime #MaritimeAffairs

By Kofi Sarpong
Maritime Transport in recent years have gained enough attention from the world as so many ways have been designed by naval architects and marine engineers to achieve safe transport of persons and goods from one place to the other via water bodies.

The recent development with respect to transportation on water bodies includes the dispatch of new ferries from the Volta Lake Transport Company and Highways Authority to make it smooth and safe to get to ones destination. It is with no doubt that some rely on the locally manufactured canoes and engine boats to embark on their trips.

However, safety always is a priority when transportation is involved. Taking a look at the construction of the boats and the routes through which they travel, it's a very risky way to be carried across a water body where no live jackets are been worn when passengers get on board. I suggest the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) enforces strict rules to be adhere by the boat owners and that they should be built under specific classifications.
